Best of Friends Special
Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? Best of Friends Special
7pm 17th March on ITV
Fierce rivals on the track but close friends off it, sporting legend Lord Sebastian Coe teams up with best friend, athletics commentator and former Olympic silver medallist Steve Cram. This long lasting friendship will be put to the ultimate test as the pair look to win the jackpot for The PSP Association and COCO (Comrades of Children Overseas). Steve said: “I’m really looking forward to sitting in the hotseat opposite Chris, although there is pressure to do well for my charity. Seb and I are used to risk taking on the track but when the clock is ticking and the beneficiary is my charity, it’s a different matter!”
Lord Coe became involved with the PSP Association when his mother was diagnosed with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy in 2003. PSP is a terminal degenerative neurological condition that affects up to 10,000 people in the UK. The association is a small charity working to ensure everyone affected with PSP has access to the health and social care that is so vital right from diagnosis. The charity also supports family members and carers during what can be a very difficult time, and raises funds for research to identify the causes, find treatment and ultimately a cure. pspassociation.org.uk
Steve is playing for COCO (Comrades of Children Overseas), a charity that he founded in 2000. COCO works in remote regions of the developing world to alleviate the poverty preventing children’s education. The team work closely with community organisations to fund solutions to poverty, ranging from classroom builds and vocational training to drilling wells and income generation schemes. Steve and COCO have always been passionate about not only improving the lives of children and young people who receive an education, but the community as a whole. Currently working with communities in Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, South Africa and Ghana, COCO continues to source projects where they can make a big difference. http://www.coco.org.uk/
Next to take centre stage are long term partners, soap star Sally Lindsay and drummer Steve White hoping to climb the money tree for the Alzheimer’s Society and testicular cancer support site Checkemlads. The former Corrie actress said: “I've always wanted to go on Millionaire and was twice as excited when I knew Steve would be doing it with me!” Can Sally and Steve hit the high notes as they aim to drum up huge amounts of cash?
Alzheimer's Society is the leading support and research charity for people with dementia, their families and carers. The Society's fight for a better world for people with all types of dementia takes a wide range of forms. Through their network of local services, they touch the lives of over 30,000 people every week, providing practical services and support for people with dementia and their carers. Through campaigning and lobbying they strive to influence government policies and raise awareness of the challenges faced by people with dementia and the people who care for them. And through their research programme they work to improve knowledge about dementia and its treatment - and pursue the ultimate goal of finding a cure. http://www.alzheimers.org.uk/
Steve is playing for Checkemlads, a testicular cancer support website. The charity promotes awareness as well as providing information, advice and support for young men suffering from the disease. It is the most-viewed male cancer website in the UK and is run voluntarily by testicular cancer survivors. They also run awareness talks in schools, workplaces and hospitals across the country, offering additional support by telephone and social media. Steve has been involved with Checkemlads since it was founded in 2003 by Philly Morris, a testicular cancer survivor. http://www.checkemlads.com/
After somersaulting his way to be crowned champion of Strictly Come Dancing, Olympic silver medallist Louis Smith joins the man behind his gymnastic success, coach Paul Hall. The pair aim to reach the perfect score for their chosen charity, the Huntingdon Gymnastics Club. Louis said: “I’m definitely excited to go on Millionaire but it's always a scary feeling when you're playing with what could be someone else's money. For that reason I am grateful to be playing with my coach Paul. We've always spoken about how good he'd be on the show so it’s great to have the opportunity to put that into practice and I can be there for moral support if nothing else!”
Louis and Paul are playing for Huntingdon Gymnastics Club which each week provides opportunities for hundreds of people to stay healthy, to have fun, to meet new people and to achieve excellence. With elite athletes such as Louis Smith & Daniel Keatings, they have won 3 Olympic, 4 World & over 20 European Medals. They also run activities for everyone from babies to adults, freestyle and disability groups. After the successful London Olympics, the club is now raising money to build a new extension ensuring wider access to world-class facilities for a new generation of Olympians. http://www.huntingdon-gymnastics.org/
Chris Tarrant, will ensure the celebs are put to the test in order to climb the big money tree. The money won by the contestants will be shared 50/50 between their charities and one lucky viewer at home!
